Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has emerged with a fresh political party, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), officially introduced on Thursday at its headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi.
Gachagua revealed that the idea for the party took shape over the last six months during consultations held at his home, reflecting on the kind of leadership Kenyans are seeking. According to him, DCP is founded on the belief that real change will only come when ordinary citizens are genuinely heard and represented.
“The people of Kenya have made it clear — they are not short on solutions. They simply want a platform that listens and acts on their concerns,” Gachagua stated, highlighting the party's rallying call, “Skiza Wakenya”, Swahili for Listen to Kenyans.
Emphasizing openness and inclusivity, he said the party has brought together voices from across the country, with special emphasis on youth representation, including Gen Z involvement. The DCP's symbol — a hand cupping an ear — represents its promise to stay tuned to citizens' voices. The party’s identity is also visually marked by green, red, white, and black colors.
Key figures have already been appointed to leadership roles within the new outfit. Cleophas Malala has been named Interim Deputy Party Leader, David Mingati is the National Chairperson, while Mithika Linturi, former Agriculture CS, has been appointed National Organizing Secretary. Cate Waruguru, former Laikipia Woman Representative, will serve as the National Women’s Leader, and Peter Mwathi, former Limuru MP, as Deputy Party Chair in charge of strategy. Other officials include Hesbon Obanga as Secretary General, Hannah Mutua as Treasurer, Andrew Kiplimo Muge as Director of Elections, Maina Kamanda as Chairperson of the Council of Eminent Persons, and Alex Khamasi as National Coordinator for Counties. Additional roles were assigned to Mercy Gakuya as Secretary for Education, Hussein Athmani as Secretary for Tourism, and John Maraga as the representative for Persons with Disabilities.
Looking ahead, Gachagua announced a grand launch of the DCP scheduled for June 4. Following the launch, he plans a two-year tour across Kenya aimed at building grassroots support and increasing the party’s popularity.
