Grief and sorrow filled the air at the Seventh-day Adventist Church within Multimedia University as students, faculty members, and relatives came together to remember Sylvia Kemunto—a first-year student whose life was cut short in a tragic incident late last month.
During the moving memorial, attendees described Sylvia as a gentle and sociable young woman who was deeply committed to her academic journey. Her fellow students shared memories of a thoughtful and hardworking friend, expressing shock and pain over the loss.
Family members spoke of a bright future taken away far too soon, calling her death a devastating blow that ended a life full of hope and ambition.
Representatives from the university administration conveyed their sadness over the incident, acknowledging its occurrence within the institution’s grounds. While they admitted the limitations in preventing such a tragedy, the university council pledged ongoing support to the grieving family and emphasized the need for collective responsibility in enhancing campus safety. Male students, in particular, were encouraged to play an active role in safeguarding their female peers.
Kemunto’s life was tragically ended on March 30th. The key suspect, Philip Eric Mutinda, remains in custody as investigations continue. She will be laid to rest this coming Friday in Kisii County.
