Mudavadi Calls for Unified Pressure to End Sudan Crisis

At the London Conference on Sudan, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi emphasized the urgent need to bring Sudan's rival factions to the negotiation table, urging the international community to intensify efforts to end the ongoing conflict.

Mudavadi stressed the importance of establishing inclusive and secure environments where all Sudanese communities can engage in dialogue. He asserted that only through such inclusive conversations can peace be restored and civilian suffering eased.

"Kenya advocates for dialogue that includes every segment of Sudanese society and believes equal pressure must be applied to both sides to compel them toward peace talks," a portion of his official statement noted.

In his address, Mudavadi also appealed to donor countries to fulfill their pledges to support those displaced by the violence. He underscored the role of continental institutions, urging respect for the African Union and IGAD as key actors in resolving African conflicts.

The high-level conference drew representatives and foreign ministers from a wide range of nations including the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Egypt, South Sudan, Uganda, and Qatar, among others. Despite broad participation, delegates fell short of reaching a unified position, although calls for deeper diplomatic engagement persisted.

Mudavadi’s remarks come amid Kenya’s increasingly active role in regional peacebuilding. However, this involvement has not been without controversy. Nairobi’s decision to host RSF leaders was met with disapproval from Sudan’s government, triggering retaliatory trade restrictions on Kenyan goods.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a brutal power struggle between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced nearly 13 million people.

Although recent developments have seen SAF forces regain control of Khartoum, the RSF has countered by launching fresh offensives in Darfur, forcing even more civilians from refugee camps in the west.
