Miraa Exporters Ordered to Comply with New Miraa Rates or Lose Licenses

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has issued a strong warning to miraa traders and exporters, urging them to adhere to newly established minimum pricing or risk losing their licenses.

Addressing farmers during the Meru Farmers' Day on Friday, CS Kagwe stressed that the Ministry will not hesitate to delist non-compliant businesses. He added that those who fail to observe the new rates must reapply for licenses and submit the pricing structures they intend to offer producers.

“These price adjustments align with prevailing market conditions and are aimed at shielding farmers from economic pressures,” Kagwe said, noting that high air transport costs can no longer justify the exploitation of growers. “If you can’t meet the pricing standards, it may be time to explore alternative business options,” he added.

Turning to the macadamia sector, Kagwe reaffirmed the government’s continued ban on raw nut exports. He said the measure is critical in protecting local processors and enhancing the domestic value chain.

He also tasked the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) with developing comprehensive guidelines on certified macadamia seedlings to promote quality and consistency across the industry.

The event was also attended by key sector figures, including Tigania West MP and Agriculture Committee Chair John Mutunga, Tigania East MP Mpuru Aburi, and AFA Director General Bruno Linyiru.

Earlier this year, the Ministry revised miraa prices significantly. Grade 1 miraa now fetches Ksh.1,300 per kilogram, up from Ksh.700. Grade 2 was increased to Ksh.700 from Ksh.350, while Alele now commands Ksh.1,000 per kilogram, up from Ksh.500.

According to Ministry data, the miraa industry generates approximately Ksh.13 billion in annual revenue, underlining its vital role in Kenya’s agricultural economy.
