Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has downplayed the political significance of the newly launched Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying it does not carry any real political weight.
Speaking in Eldoret, Cherargei criticised the new outfit’s approach, arguing it began on the wrong foot by focusing on a specific region rather than presenting a national agenda.
“DCP is like the majority of political parties in this country—tribal and built around individuals. It has no capacity whatsoever to shake President Ruto’s political base,” he said.
He accused Gachagua and his allies of promoting ethnic divisions and misleading the public, asserting that President William Ruto continues to enjoy strong political backing both in Mt Kenya and across the country.
Cherargei also raised concerns about the legitimacy of the party’s registration, alleging it fails to meet legal requirements.
“Only ODM and UDA meet that requirement. We will be demanding that the registrar of political parties deregister all non-compliant outfits,” he stated.
He took issue with opposition voices calling for President Ruto’s removal from office and reiterated the President's firm footing and political future.
“They say Ruto must go, but our message is clear—Ruto must go to State House, or rather, Ruto must continue. That’s ‘Kumi bila break’,” he said, referencing the President’s ambition to serve two full terms.
Cherargei was also dismissive of critics, especially those aligned with Gachagua, suggesting they had been in leadership before but had little to show for it.
“Unless they’re from Jerusalem, they’re the same people who failed to improve the country before. They have nothing new to offer,” he added.
