Detectives in Isiolo have recovered two AK-47 rifles suspected to have been used in a deadly attack that left three National Police Reservists (NPR) dead in Igembe North, Meru County.
In a statement issued on Saturday, April 26, 2025, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced that the weapons were recovered during a joint operation carried out at Lemorijo Village in the Lengurma area of Isiolo North Sub-county. Crime Scene Investigation officers led the operation, which followed intensive tracking efforts.
The firearms, both discovered with empty magazines, are believed to be those stolen during a violent encounter on April 7, 2025, when armed raiders ambushed NPR officers in Meea, Igembe North.
“This operation was a direct response to the heinous incident where three reservists lost their lives. The recovered rifles are thought to have been used during the attack,” the DCI said in their statement. They credited the success to close cooperation between elite DCI units, local administrators, area residents, and the DCI Igembe North office, which is now leading the ongoing investigation.
The agency commended the officers involved and reassured the public that investigations are progressing and further updates would be provided.
During the April 7 attack, several other police reservists were wounded as they engaged the raiders in a fierce evening shootout around 6 PM.
Meru County Commissioner Jacob Ouma confirmed the deadly confrontation at the time, noting that despite the tragic loss of three officers, security teams managed to recover all livestock stolen during the raid.
