President William Ruto paid tribute to the late George Oduor, a longtime bodyguard of Raila Odinga, during his burial ceremony held in Ndori, Siaya County. The President revealed that he had previously worked with Oduor during his time in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), describing him as a dependable figure in moments that called for heightened security.
Reflecting on their shared experiences, Ruto noted that Oduor was often present and ready to serve, offering protection not just to Raila Odinga but to other ODM members as well.
“I first met George during my time with ODM. We went through many situations together, and it's true—like someone mentioned—I too benefited from his security services. George was always ready to step in when the need arose,” Ruto recounted. He even referenced some familiar faces at the funeral, including an individual he previously mistook for a security officer, only to learn he is now an elected MCA.
The President said his presence at the funeral was not just to mourn a loss, but to honor a life lived with integrity and service.
He described the late Oduor as a trusted ally of the former Prime Minister and a man of deep dedication.
“George was more than just a security officer. He was a person of remarkable competence and integrity, someone who remained steadfast in his loyalty to both his duty and his country. His commitment and humility are the reasons I am here today—to celebrate a Kenyan who upheld values we all aspire to.”
Ruto also spoke about how emotionally moving it was to hear from George's widow, Mama Caren Auma, and from Raila Odinga himself during the ceremony.
George Oduor, aged 57, passed away on April 2 in Nairobi after a brief illness. He had served as Raila Odinga’s personal bodyguard since 1995 and is being laid to rest at his home in Ndori, near Bondo.
